Food & Drinks at Abu Simbel
Options are limited at this remote desert site. Plan ahead with our guide to on-site cafeterias and what to bring with you.
Due to its isolated location, dining options at Abu Simbel are basic. Most visitors on a day trip from Aswan bring their own provisions. This guide covers what's available on-site and what we recommend you pack for the journey.
Dining Options
On-Site Cafeteria
There is a small cafeteria and several coffee shops near the entrance and visitor center. They offer basic snacks, sandwiches, soft drinks, tea, and coffee. Prices are higher than in Aswan, and the selection is limited, but it's a convenient option for a quick refreshment.
What to Bring
It is highly recommended to bring your own supplies. Pack plenty of bottled water to stay hydrated in the desert climate. Ask your hotel in Aswan to prepare a packed breakfast or lunch box for you. Snacks like fruit, nuts, and granola bars are also a good idea for the long journey.
Restaurants in Town
The small town of Abu Simbel has a few local restaurants and hotel dining rooms. These are primarily an option for those staying overnight. Day tours typically do not allow enough time for a sit-down meal in the town before returning to Aswan.
Stay Hydrated
The single most important tip for any visitor to Abu Simbel is to drink plenty of water. The climate is extremely dry and hot, especially from late morning onwards. Even in the cooler winter months, dehydration is a risk.
Aim to drink at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water during your trip. Your tour vehicle will be air-conditioned, but the time spent walking around the open-air site under the sun requires constant hydration. Bottled water is readily available for purchase at the site, but it's cheaper to buy it in Aswan beforehand.
